Elder Abuse and Neglect

Learn about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem.

Nurses may be the first to recognise signs or symptoms of abuse and are in a key position to provide support, guidance and resources to the older person. Nurses also have a role in developing evidence-based policies and procedures within their organisations to ensure older adults experiencing abuse are identified and supported.

When you have completed this course you should be able to:

  1. Recognise and define the different types and forms of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
  2. Identify risk factors and respond to cases of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
  3. Understand the right of competent individuals to make his or her own personal care decisions.
  4. Contribute to the capacity of your organisation to respond to Elder Abuse and Neglect.
