Infectious and Communicable Disease

Explores the contemporary challenges of infectious and communicable diseases, as well as their control and prevention in emergency nursing.

This Course will cover the principles of incident and outbreak management, health-care associated infections and the impact of HIA and Communicable Disease in Emergency Care. It will also investigate the major modes of transmission of infectious diseases and a broad range of common infectious disease topics including Tuberculosis, HIV, Hepatitis and Gastrointestinal Illnesses.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. Understand and apply the standard precautions of communicable disease control.
  2. Understand the impact of HIA and communicable disease.
  3. Identify the major modes of transmission of infectious diseases.
  4. Identify the chain of infection.
  5. Understand the immune response.
  6. Identify the different control strategies for infectious diseases.
  7. Recognise the specific challenges for prevention.
  8. Understand your role in preventing infection.
