Self-Care Sunday: Simple Tips Every Nurse Needs

Self-Care Sunday: Simple Tips Every Nurse Needs

Date Posted:18 September 2025

Nursing is rewarding, but it’s no secret that the long shifts, unpredictable hours, and daily demands can take a toll. That’s why self-care isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s essential. Taking a little time to look after yourself can boost your energy, improve your mood, and help you show up as your best self for your patients.

Here are 5 simple self-care tips to add to your routine this week.

1. Stay on Top of Hydration

It’s easy to forget about water when you’re racing from patient to patient. Dehydration can sneak up quickly, leaving you tired and foggy. Keep a reusable water bottle with you during your shift and aim to sip regularly. If plain water isn’t appealing, try adding a slice of lemon or a splash of electrolyte mix to keep it interesting.

2. Prioritise Quality Sleep

Shift work often makes sleep unpredictable, but rest is one of the most powerful tools for recovery. Create a calming pre-bed routine: dim the lights, put your phone away, and make your bedroom as dark and quiet as possible. Even short naps can help recharge if your schedule doesn’t allow for a full 8 hours.

3. Move Your Body

You’re on your feet all day, but intentional movement outside of work can do wonders. Think stretching, yoga, or a quick walk to ease tension and support circulation. Gentle exercise helps reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and release those much-needed endorphins.

4. Look After Your Scrubs

Caring for your uniform might not sound like self-care, but fresh, well-kept scrubs can boost confidence and comfort on shift. Wash them separately, treat stains quickly, and let them air dry when possible. Looking after your scrubs means they’ll last longer, and you’ll feel better wearing them.

5. Take Small Moments for Yourself

Self-care doesn’t always mean long spa days. It’s often the small things: enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, listening to a podcast on your commute, or stepping outside for fresh air between tasks. Finding little pockets of joy during your day can make a big difference to your wellbeing.

Final Thoughts

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. By staying hydrated, protecting your sleep, moving your body, caring for your scrubs, and finding small daily moments for yourself, you’ll feel more balanced and supported both on and off the ward.

At eNurse, we’re here to support you with scrubs, footwear, and resources that help make your shifts a little easier.
